About Mane & Tale
The story behind the stable
Mane & Tale is a browser-based horse simulation game built around three things: realistic genetics, competitive showing, and community storytelling.
You start with a stable, a handful of Sparks, and a blank page. From there you build — creating horses, developing bloodlines, competing in shows, and writing the stories of the animals in your care. Whether you're a breeder chasing the perfect performance horse, a competitor climbing the show ranks, or a storyteller weaving tales around your stable's history, Mane & Tale is designed to give you the tools to do it.
The game features 84 breeds across every major discipline — from cutting and reining to grand prix dressage, from flat racing to combined driving. Horses have real genetic systems with 20 gene pairs governing color and pattern, thirteen performance and personality stats, and a hidden blood potency that influences breeding outcomes. No two horses are exactly alike.
Mane & Tale was created by Rhianon, who has been building and refining the concept for many years before finally bringing it to life in mid-2025.
The project is a solo endeavor — every system, every rule, every breed entry and discipline class was designed and built by one person with a long-standing passion for horses, simulation games, and the kind of creative community that grows up around them.
Special thanks go to Merry and Shanny, who were invaluable sounding boards in the early days of the project — listening patiently to ideas, asking the right questions, and helping shape what Mane & Tale became.
Horse simulation games have existed for decades, but they've often had to choose between depth and accessibility — either the genetics are oversimplified, the showing system is a black box, or the community is an afterthought.
Mane & Tale tries to do all of it. The genetics are real enough to be meaningful — a Frame Overo carrier paired with another can produce a lethal white foal, just as in real life. The show results are driven by the horse's actual stats. The economy runs on player activity and community participation. And the stories you write about your horses are as much a part of the game as the competition results.
The goal has always been a game where the horses feel like real animals with histories, bloodlines, and personalities — not just numbers on a screen.
Mane & Tale is built on PHP 8.3 and MySQL, integrated with an SMF 2.1 forum for community discussion. The game and forum share a single login — your forum account is your game account. No separate registration required.
The site was built entirely from scratch — no game engines, no pre-built frameworks beyond Bootstrap for the front end. Every system from the genetic engine to the show calculator was designed and coded specifically for Mane & Tale.
The best place to reach Rhianon is on the Mane & Tale forum. Bug reports, suggestions, questions and general chat are all welcome there.
If you find a bug or something isn't working as expected, please report it on the forum. The game is actively developed and player feedback directly shapes what gets built next.
